Movement sketches with dancer Sue Carlton-Jones – sketch book from Wales

Over the years I have worked with many models producing rapid watercolours and line drawings…..always aiming to capture the gesture and sense of movement.

One of the best models I have ever had the good fortune to work with is Sue Carlton-Jones, who enjoyed an illustrious career in the world of ballet.

As an eleven year old she gained entrance to the Whitehouse Ballet School in Richmond Park, and from there went onto The Royal Ballet.

Sue has an innate understanding of what the painter needs, along with being one of the most professional and disciplined models I have worked with……which of course comes from her years of dance, teaching and choreography..

The following rapid movement sketches come form a sketchbook made in Wales, which is where Sue and I originally met.

Thank you, Peter. These sketches are less than a minute….and the model is moving constantly – Once again it’s all about getting into a rhythm and of course observation. Janet
