Following my previous post where I mixed watercolour and gouache and was working from an old sketch –
In this post I am using pure watercolour and any white you see is dry white paper.
Margarida who runs the School in Portugal. I always begin a portrait with the eye placement. From there I indicate the map of the face which initially appears like a jigsaw puzzle. Again it’s important to note that all white is Dry White Paper.
I am using a mix of burnt Sienna and Prussian Blue (excellent idea to play with these two pigments) with them you can achieve many different tones.
Please feel free to post any questions.
A magical hummingbird to bring some love into the equation…..mix of watercolour and gouache:)

WOW!
Just loved all these Janet, as well as being a fantastic artist, you’re clearly a talented teacher. Why oh why though, am I not getting email notifications of these posts !Sighs…xxx
Oh I do hope we have sorted that…I will be posting quite a few tutorials, tips etc. and thank you for the lovely compliment…high praise indeed from you XXXX
I’ve re-followed! Hopefully that will sort the problem.xxx
Hi Dina…let’s hope that this does it. Wash all hands and paws….and stay well and safe:). XXXX
Burnt Sienna and Prussian Blue? I love using red ochre and Burnt Sienna for my under painting but I have never really got on with Prussian Blue for some reason, I use a phtahlo blue instead.
Prussian Blue is such a powerful pigment and so it’s vital to use the appropriate amounts. In this portrait demo, the dark hair areas are almost a half and half mix – whereas the shadow ares have barely a touch of Prussian Blue in the mix. I am often heard joking when giving a workshop…that we should drop Prussian Blue on the enemy…(because they would be stained for ever:) rather than bombs that it…….Hope you are getting back to normal and have a decent weekend. Janet
lol!! I think phthalo blue is a lot like that, a tiny bit will go a long way.
I do love phthalo blue and yes you are right they are both very staining pigments…..Enjoy your day..it is glorious here. I have windows flung open with sunshine streaming through….Janet:)
Windy here some sun but a lot of clouds too.
That was fascinating to watch. 🙂
Thank you 🙂
These are so beautifully vivid! I don’t know how you achieve the saturation and pigment but it’s always amazing.
Thank you very much Julia for this lovely comment. I will be blogging.a week in Portugal beginning on the 15th..in lieu of my course which has been cancelled…with some demos. Janet X
